The Towpath Trail is part of an 101-mile trail that follows the historic route of the Ohio and Erie Canal.
What makes the Tremont section special is that it is the only portion of the trail in Cleveland that connects directly to an urban neighborhood, offering breathtaking cityscape views and a warm and welcoming community experience.
The Towpath Trail in Tremont was designed to complement the rich history of the neighborhood so that it enhances the spaces, landmarks and attractions of the community.
For residents, the Towpath creates opportunities to easily connect to the outdoors, destinations in and around Tremont, and with neighbors. From a morning run to an evening stroll, from walking dogs to riding bikes, the Towpath offers something for everyone, fueling economic vitality and improving quality of life.
For visitors, enticing amenities beckon just steps from the Towpath. From coffee shops and restaurants, to galleries, boutiques and historic architecture, Tremont offers fun-filled days and vibrant nights.

Connect with Neighbors & Friends on the Towpath Trail in Tremont
Tremont West is thrilled to bring new programming to Tremont this year. Towpath Trail in Tremont programming is a partnership with Tremont West Development Corporation and the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area
with additional support from Cleveland-Cliffs. We have five different monthly groups that will be available for anyone to have the opportunity to see the new Towpath Trail in Tremont. Our volunteers are excited to explore our neighborhood with you.
The program guide is listed on page 7. There are opportunities to learn about the history of Tremont with the Tremont History Project. The Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society volunteers will lead walks to find different bird species we have here in our neighborhood. If you just want to walk and get exercise, there is a walking club. The running club is a partnership with Tremont Athletic Club, you’ll be able to meet new friends and enjoy a run together. The Family Group will begin each meet-up with a story and craft provided by our librarians at the Jefferson and South Branches of Cleveland Public Library, followed by a walk on the trail.
In addition, we will have three special programs to explore with the Cleveland Metroparks. Each of these sessions requires pre-registration. You can do so by emailing us at [email protected]. In June, we’ll Round the Mounds to the Roundhouse with Doug Kusak; in August, we’ll Walk Along the River Nature Hike with Jill Hauger; and in October, we’ll learn about the Columbus Street Bridge War with Judy MacKeigan.
