The Towpath Trail is part of an 101-mile trail that follows the historic route of the Ohio and Erie Canal.

The Ohio & Erie Towpath Trail was first constructed 175 years ago by the National Park Service to provide a transportation route from Cleveland, on Lake Erie, to Portsmouth, on the Ohio River. Today, trail users can walk or ride a bike through the same path that transported canal boats filled with goods and passengers. The trail provides countless opportunities for recreation while highlighting the natural beauty and city views of the region.

The towpath is open year round.

  • Travel at a safe speed and keep to the right, except to pass others.
  • Bicyclists yield to all users.
  • Don’t risk a head injury—always wear a helmet when cycling.
  • Give a clear warning before passing on the left.
  • Travel single file when passing and being passed.
  • Pets must be kept on a leash. Please use a short leash and keep pets on the right side of the trail.
  • Move off the trail when stopping to reset.

There are four organizations who are responsible for building and maintaining the Towpath Trail:

Canalway Partners is the chief fundraiser for the Towpath Trail in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County. This organization takes the lead in strategic decision-making, grant writing, and community outreach.

The Cleveland Metroparks handles the day-to-day maintenance of the Towpath Trail and park rangers provide security.

The City of Cleveland is the landowner of the Towpath Trail. They are responsible for capital repairs to the Trail. The Cleveland City Planning Commission contributes its expertise.

Cuyahoga County serves as the project manager for the Towpath Trail extension. The Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works is in charge of tracking project funds and contracts.

Connect with Neighbors & Friends on the Towpath Trail in Tremont

Tremont West is thrilled to bring new programming to Tremont this year. Towpath Trail in Tremont programming is a partnership with Tremont West Development Corporation and the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area

with additional support from Cleveland-Cliffs. We have five different monthly groups that will be available for anyone to have the opportunity to see the new Towpath Trail in Tremont. Our volunteers are excited to explore our neighborhood with you.

The program guide is listed on page 7. There are opportunities to learn about the history of Tremont with the Tremont History Project. The Western Cuyahoga Audubon Society volunteers will lead walks to find different bird species we have here in our neighborhood. If you just want to walk and get exercise, there is a walking club. The running club is a partnership with Tremont Athletic Club, you’ll be able to meet new friends and enjoy a run together. The Family Group will begin each meet-up with a story and craft provided by our librarians at the Jefferson and South Branches of Cleveland Public Library, followed by a walk on the trail.

In addition, we will have three special programs to explore with the Cleveland Metroparks. Each of these sessions requires pre-registration. You can do so by emailing us at [email protected]. In June, we’ll Round the Mounds to the Roundhouse with Doug Kusak; in August, we’ll Walk Along the River Nature Hike with Jill Hauger; and in October, we’ll learn about the Columbus Street Bridge War with Judy MacKeigan.
